Three Bean Drink is effective in preventing pox and rash, sore throat, and fever of epidemic infection. There are several canonical versions of Three Bean Drink, and the one described here is from the “Three Hundred Types of Integrated Liang Fang”. The formula consists of four medicines: red kidney beans to relieve swelling and detoxify pus; mung beans to clear heat and remove toxins and eliminate summer heat; black beans to nourish the blood and dispel wind, and to relieve water and detoxification; and fresh rehmannia root to clear heat and remove fire, generate fluids and remove vexation, quench thirst and stop vomiting, and induce diuresis. All the medicines in the formula work together to clear heat and remove toxins, diuretic effect of swelling. For the prevention of pediatric pox rash (i.e. smallpox, symptoms of cold, chills, fever, head and face pox spread all over the body, etc.), heat and toxin accumulation of sore throat, vomiting thick phlegm, epidemic infection of fever, chills, coughing, sweating, etc. has a certain effect. This formula should be taken with caution for those with gas stagnation and abdominal distension, and those with spleen deficiency and diarrhea; please use this formula under the guidance of a physician; if the above mentioned symptoms occur, please consult a doctor immediately, and do not use medicines blindly, so as to avoid delaying or aggravating the condition.
