Special features of adult orthodontics

In recent years, the demand for adult orthodontics is increasing, in the United States adult orthodontics accounts for about 25G of the proportion of orthodontics, and the proportion of adult orthodontics in China is also on the increase. However, adult orthodontics differs greatly from children’s orthodontics, which is related to the physiological, anatomical, work and psychological state characteristics of adults. The skeletal development of adults has been completed, there is no problem of using growth spurt for growth improvement, the jaw development potential available in childhood no longer exists in adults this feature is bound to affect the development of orthodontic plans, the choice of orthodontic methods, the determination of orthodontic goals and the length of maintenance time. First of all, adult orthodontics is mostly active and has its own clear goals and aesthetic requirements, so adult orthodontics has a tendency to be more individualized and should not take a relatively homogeneous orthodontic program as in the case of children’s orthodontics. As adults age, in addition to malocclusion, they often have other dental problems, such as dental caries, periodontal disease, temporomandibular joint disease or missing teeth, and may even have some systemic health factors, which should be taken into account in the orthodontic design and treatment process and treated accordingly as necessary. The jaw plasticity of adults is much less than that of children, so the orthodontic process should not be too fast, and the orthodontic force should be added slowly and gently, so the orthodontic course of treatment for adults may be relatively longer compared to that of children. All the above factors should be explained clearly to the patients before the start of adult orthodontics, so as to get the maximum cooperation from the patients in the process of orthodontics, so that the orthodontic treatment can be carried out smoothly and achieve a satisfactory result for both doctors and patients. Secondly, for reasons such as work and social activities, adults have special requirements for the aesthetics of the orthodontic appliance. At present, mini brackets, bioceramic brackets, plastic clear brackets, transparent archwires and lingual braces that are not visible from the lip side are available to meet the special requirements of adult orthodontics for aesthetics for adult patients. In addition, at the end of orthodontic treatment, one is that adults wear retainers for a longer period of time than children, and the other is that adults have equally high aesthetic requirements for retainers. It is best to choose the type of retainer that has an aesthetic impact, such as a clear pressure membrane retainer.
