How to be the doctor your little patients love

Closed a patient last Sunday. Girl, 17 years old, 3rd degree crowding. 1 year and 10 months of treatment with New Asia straight arch aligners, straight teeth and good bite. Both the young patient and her mom were satisfied. I routinely removed the aligners, took photos, adjusted the retainer and taught her how to wear the retainer. Because of the number of follow-up appointments, I have been constantly watching the follow-up appointments. I didn’t pay attention to her, but she didn’t leave and said that she couldn’t put on the retainer in her lower jaw. I told her to wait, and then taught her again after I finished one of the follow-ups I was holding. She still wouldn’t go and said the mandibular lingual side was rubbing her mouth a bit. Cushioned the basement bracket again. I kept busy non-stop, but the kid still wouldn’t go. She also said that the U-shaped curve on the right side of the maxillary hyperbolic labial arch was uncomfortable, and waited for me to finish another consultation and adjust the labial arch for her. I was a bit puzzled and thought to myself, “What’s wrong with this child? The retainer is doing fine, no problem ah? This child is usually not so nosy, right? Her mother saw what I was thinking and said with a smile, “Dr. Song, Wang Xiaonan likes you very much, so let her follow you, huh.” It was only then that I realized that it was the child who couldn’t leave. I immediately agreed, “OK, after learning the oral cavity to come to me as an apprentice.” Mother and father both laughed, happy to go. I was very excited, because this patient is a silent child, every follow-up are not big and I talk. I did not realize that the inner world is quite rich, huh. In my daily work, I pay much attention to the communication with patients, no matter how busy I am, I have to have a short communication with parents and small patients in every follow-up appointment, including the situation of brushing teeth, the comfort level of orthodontic appliances, whether the teeth are sore or not, as well as some of the children’s interest in the topic, etc. From the communication, we can also learn about our own practice, and we can also learn about our own practice. From the communication, I can also understand my own shortcomings in operation, and try to adjust the force value, and do a good job in ligature wire and archwire end, so as to make the patient more comfortable. So, over the years, I have a basic understanding with many patients and parents. They also become friends, and some of the patients who have finished stay in touch and think about coming to see their teeth and seeing me on vacation. There are a few little girls who come for follow-ups and stay in the office, not going to the waiting hall. They stand next to me and chat with me and watch me treat others. The world of children is very simple and sunny. It is a happy thing to be friends with them. As a doctor, we have to look after the teeth well, but we also have to pay attention to the communication with the patients. There is a reason why we should treat the patients as our own family members, and the longer we work, the more profound this experience will be. If we can treat patients as our own children, our little patients will like us, then they will be very cooperative with the treatment. Wouldn’t it be nice to see coming to the hospital as a happy event? To be a good doctor, good technology is the hardware, which we should always keep learning and improving. To be a good doctor, to establish a good relationship of trust with the patient, to establish a positive doctor-patient relationship, should be the direction of our life to continue to pursue and strive.
