Initial consultation: Both parents and patient are required to be present. The child is initially examined to see if he/she needs orthodontic treatment, to point out any oral or maxillary problems, and to propose a treatment plan. If the child is in need of and willing to undergo treatment, then further examination is carried out: a model of the upper and lower jaws is taken and X-rays are taken (curved tomography of the oral cavity, lateral cephalometric films, orthopantomograms of the cephalic position). The first follow-up visit: parents and patient are required to be present to discuss in detail the problems and treatment options. Including: whether orthodontic treatment is possible; whether teeth need to be extracted, which teeth to extract; what materials to use; efficacy, duration of treatment, cost and some possible problems. Second visit: Separation of teeth (if extractions are needed, the child will have to have the teeth extracted and recover for a period of time before separating the teeth). Third visit: Fitting of aligners. Subsequent visits are usually every 3-4 weeks. Minor variations may exist depending on the orthodontic procedure.
