Patients with hypothyroidism who are not treated with medication will experience a range of symptoms of thyroid hormone deficiency, commonly such as weakness, fear of cold, unresponsiveness, memory loss, drowsiness, and constipation. The effects on the cardiovascular system can lead to mucus edema of the heart muscle, resulting in impaired contractility of the heart muscle and heart failure due to decreased contractility of the heart muscle, called hypothyroid heart disease. Hypothyroidism also leads to edema of the intestinal tract causing absorption disorders, leading to anemia, bloating, constipation, and menstrual disorders or amenorrhea in female patients, and in severe cases, mucus edema, coma, shock, renal insufficiency, and even life-threatening.
