Centrifugal erythema annulare is classified as superficial or deep. The superficial type is initially a pale red flat papule with elevated margins, which may be scaly on the inner side, and in the central zone the lesions fade to form a ring, which is pale red or slightly yellow, with new lesions still occurring in the central fading phase, forming a double ring, multiple rings or geoglyphs. The lesions fade after 1 to 2 weeks, leaving hyperpigmented patches. In contrast to the superficial type, the erythema is non-scaly, with raised margins, prominent and firm infiltrates and no pruritus.
