Is a red tongue a false fire or a real fire?

According to Chinese medicine, a red tongue in most cases represents real fire, and when the tongue is small and has little moss, or has cracks, or appears red and has no moss, it is virtual fire. TCM practitioners can observe a patient’s condition by identifying the patient’s tongue, and the color of the tongue is a very important part of this. A red tongue means there is heat, but it depends on the specific situation to determine whether it is actual heat or deficiency heat. When the tongue is slightly red, or only the tip of the tongue is red, it suggests that there is an external wind-heat syndrome; if the patient’s tongue is bright red and there is awn, or there is a yellow thick moss for the real heat; and the tip of the tongue is red, often suggesting that there is fire in the heart; the tongue is red, suggesting that there is fire in the liver. All of the above belong to the solid heat evidence. When the patient’s tongue is small, bright red and no tongue coating, or very little tongue coating, or there are cracks in the middle, suggesting that it is a false heat syndrome. TCM practitioners do not look at a disease only through the tongue coating, but consider it in conjunction with the patient’s examination, hearing, questioning and examination, and the four diagnostic methods. Therefore, even a red tongue cannot diagnose a disease. If you have a red tongue and want to solve the problem, you should consult a Chinese medicine hospital.
