A period, medically known as menstruation, which lasts for more than 20 days without stopping, can be caused by endometrial polyps, uterine smooth muscle tumors, or endometrial cancer. It can be treated with medication and surgery.
1. Endometrial polyp: the endometrium grows excessively locally, and when the polyp gradually becomes bigger and presses the surrounding endometrium, the sensitivity of this part of the endometrium to estrogen and progesterone may be changed, resulting in abnormal shedding of the endometrium, which leads to the phenomenon of non-stop menstruation for more than 20 days, and this kind of patients can be treated by hysteroscopic surgery, such as hysteroscopic electrosurgery, and so on.
2. Uterine smooth muscle tumor: in patients with uterine smooth muscle tumor, certain substances produced by the tumor may interfere with the normal blood clotting of the endometrium, which may lead to the phenomenon of non-stop menstruation for more than 20 days, and this kind of patients can be treated by surgery, such as myomectomy.
3. Endometrial cancer: the infiltration of cancer cells may cause necrosis and shedding of the endometrium, leading to the phenomenon of non-stop menstruation for more than 20 days. This kind of patients should be treated by surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy according to the specific situation. For example, hysterectomy, 5-fluorouracil, mitomycin and so on.
There are also other reasons why menstruation doesn’t stop for 20 days, so it is recommended that these patients go to a regular hospital, cooperate with the doctor to complete the relevant examinations, and then actively deal with the cause after clarifying the cause.
