Breast anechoic refers to a non-echoic nodule that is suggested when an ultrasound is performed to examine the breast. Breast anechoic nodules may be breast cysts or breast abscesses.
Ultrasound suggestive of breast anechoicity may be caused by a breast cyst. Breast cysts usually have an intact peritoneum and the borders are often well defined. The cyst may contain fluid. If the cyst is large, the contents may be drained by puncture.
Breast anechoicity suggested by ultrasound may also be a breast abscess, and women may feel the presence of an abscess in addition to localized redness, swelling, heat and pain as signs of inflammation.
Breast anechoic nodules found during ultrasound examination are more likely to be benign. However, regular observation is still needed and prompt medical attention is required when problems are detected.
