Fasting is generally required for MRI-enhanced examinations. The reason for fasting is, first of all, to prevent an allergic reaction, which may cause vomiting, and the patient is supine during the examination, the vomit is easy to cause the patient to accidentally inhale, enter the airway, causing more serious injury, or even suffocation. In addition, even if it is not an enhanced magnetic resonance examination, if you do abdominal magnetic resonance scanning, you need to fasting, because eating will increase gastrointestinal peristalsis, and intestinal peristalsis artifacts can not be inhibited, and if the artifacts are too heavy, it will affect the quality of the image, which will affect the diagnosis. The scan is performed after the patient has been injected intravenously with some type of contrast agent prior to the examination. Although most of the contrast agents are now very safe, it cannot be ruled out that a very small number of patients may experience a variety of allergic reactions and other discomforts, such as vomiting in the case of allergies. If the patient eats before the examination, once the patient vomits during the operation, the vomit may lead to choking, which may endanger the patient’s life in serious cases. Therefore, for safety reasons, it is generally recommended that the patient should have an empty stomach for more than 6 hours before the MRI enhancement scan.
