The time needed to get off the ventilator varies greatly depending on the degree of difficulty, ranging from 10-30 minutes to 1-3 days, and in some cases even 1-2 weeks. Very few patients are ventilator-dependent and cannot be taken off the ventilator.
There are many factors affecting the ease of ventilator disengagement, highlighted by respiratory function, cardiac function, respiratory muscle strength, respiratory power, and mental status.
For example, paraplegic patients, patients with respiratory muscle paralysis, respiratory muscle weakness, poorly controlled lung infections, cardiac insufficiency, chronic respiratory failure, etc. are important factors that lead to a long time of off-boarding, or even the inability to get off the ventilator. Very often, how long it takes to get off the machine or whether it can be taken off the machine may not be a single factor, but a combination of factors.
Whether or not a ventilator can be taken off the machine is a professional and gradual process, and should be carried out under the care of a physician to carry out pre-discharge training and a comprehensive assessment of whether or not the conditions for discharging have been reached, and should not be judged simply on the basis of time.
