How long does it usually take for a bulging disc to return to normal

Bulging lumbar discs are usually treated conservatively, and the milder ones can recover in 1-2 weeks, while the more severe ones can get relief in 6-8 weeks of treatment. Most of the symptoms of lumbar disc bulge are reversible and can generally recover on their own, requiring active conservative treatment, bed rest is more important, while massage, acupuncture, baking, hot compresses, moxibustion and other treatments, as well as taking blood circulation herbs, topical ointments or sprays that have the effect of reducing swelling and pain. Patients with mild symptoms can recover in 1-2 weeks. If the symptoms are more severe, the bulging disc can compress the nerves, requiring 2-3 weeks of bed rest and corresponding treatment, and the symptoms can be gradually relieved after 6-8 weeks. Patients with bulging discs should usually pay attention to less bending, avoid weight-bearing, prolonged sitting, prolonged standing, avoid strenuous exercise, pay attention to local warmth, timely calcium supplementation, and appropriate functional exercise.
