Babinski’s sign is a pathological reflex that is usually seen in adults with cerebrovascular disease, mainly due to damage to the pyramidal fasciculus, and is a specific response. The normal negative response is dorsiflexion of all toes and the positive response is dorsiflexion of the bunions with the rest of the toes fanned out. Babinski’s sign can occur in infants and children because the cerebral cortex is not fully developed, but it is not a pathologic reaction. In adults with positive Babinski’s sign, it is recommended to seek immediate medical attention to rule out cerebrovascular disease.
