What to do if your child has a slurred speech

When children speak unclearly, they are often called big tongues, so is it because their tongues are too big and cause unclear speech? The answer is no. When we speak, besides exhaling airflow and vibrating the vocal cords, the nose, pharynx and mouth all play a resonant role, and the clarity of spitting is related to the tongue, teeth, palate and lips. Some children with congenital cleft palate can get correct pronunciation through professional pronunciation training after cleft palate repair surgery; some children cannot spit out their tongues due to short tongue ligament, which can be improved by simple surgical release treatment; some other conditions such as postnasal atresia, laryngeal webbing, laryngeal stenosis, etc. need to be carefully examined and given correct treatment to improve pronunciation. However, there are many children who have normal development of all parts of the oral cavity, but their pronunciation is inaccurate. Such as four and ten, teacher and Shi, basil and Zao, milk and short, more and drag, etc., these are all consonants are not clearly distinguished. From 6 to 12 months, you should talk to your child to induce him/her to pronounce consonants, such as “puff, puff, puff, puff, puff, puff…”. The more consonants a child makes during infancy, the higher the clarity of language when learning to speak. At the age of 3-4 years old, you can also practice individual consonant sounds to make your voice clear. You can also play a recording game for your child to record his words and play them for himself, and you can also record your mother and father’s words and compare them with his own to reinforce his perception that his voice is different from others. Some children’s tongue movement is very inflexible, they can’t see the tip of the tongue, they can’t do the tongue roll, and they will be ambiguous when pronouncing the corresponding sound. You can induce your child to lick the seaweed (or other things the child likes to eat) on the upper lip, the corner of the mouth, the lower lip with the tip of the tongue, and practice the tongue roll in front of the mirror, all of these will help your child improve the flexibility of the tongue, thus helping him/her to correct the bad pronunciation habits. If the child is stubborn in pronunciation errors, he or she can go to a professional rehabilitation institution for speech training treatment.
