The effects of Sheng Bai Zhu are tonifying Qi and strengthening the spleen, drying dampness and inducing diuresis (drying dampness and reducing water-dampness in the body), stopping sweating, and tranquilizing the fetus; its side effects include vomiting of blood, epistaxis (bleeding from the nose), blood in the stool, malignant cold (fear of cold) and fever, irritability, and blotchiness of the skin. Clinically, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae is used for treating weakness of spleen qi (weakness of spleen qi), stagnation of spleen qi, deficiency of spleen and stoppage of drinking, phlegm and drinking (pathological products of impaired metabolism of water and fluid), excessive sweating due to lack of consolidation of the muscular surface as well as restlessness of the fetus. A single herb should not be taken in large quantities for those with feverish symptoms of restlessness of the fetus in pregnancy. Patients with hypoglycemia should not take a large quantity of a single medicine for a long time. If medication is needed, it should be diagnosed by a doctor and the treatment should be standardized according to the doctor’s prescription.
