Can High Blood Sugar Cause Low Blood Pressure

High blood glucose can cause hypotension, but high blood glucose is more commonly complicated by hypertension. When diabetic autonomic neuropathy is induced by prolonged poor glycemic control in patients with hyperglycemia, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary systems may be involved, leading to the development of upright hypotension. In addition, the persistent hyperglycemia leads to osmotic diuresis, which causes excessive water loss from the body and may lead to a drop in blood pressure. However, patients with high blood sugar are more commonly complicated by hypertension, as well as chronic conditions such as hyperlipidemia and gout. If a patient with high blood glucose develops low blood pressure it is recommended to visit a hospital for regular review.
