What is Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in Children

Hand, foot and mouth disease in children is mainly caused by enterovirus 71 (EV71) and coxsackievirus A16. The infection causes maculopapular rash and herpes on the hands, feet, mouth and buttocks of children, and the herpes in the mouth often breaks down to form ulcers, which are usually painful when eating. The incubation period of HFMD in children is about 2-7 days, with or without fever, and with nonspecific symptoms such as cough, runny nose, headache, and loss of appetite. The rash does not leave scarring or hyperpigmentation.
