Preauricular fistula is a common congenital malformation, usually a small hole in front of the ear. Preauricular fistula is caused by dysplasia of the organism during the embryonic period. In the case of preauricular fistula, if there is no discharge and no pain, it can be observed conservatively to avoid dirt and sweat from entering the fistula, if there is ever pain or a lot of discharge, surgery is recommended. In adults, preauricular fistulotomy is performed under local anesthesia, while in children it is mostly done under general anesthesia.
