Are urine leukocytes positive for gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It is mainly manifested by septic infection of the genitourinary system, such as frequent urination, urgent urination, painful urination, pus flowing from the urethra or purulent discharge from the cervical or vaginal opening. Usually, patients with this disease have a positive urine test for leukocytes, but a positive urine test for leukocytes alone cannot confirm the diagnosis of gonorrhea. The following tests should be performed to confirm the diagnosis: 1. Bacterial culture: gonococcal culture is the gold standard for the diagnosis of gonorrhea, and it is a more sensitive method for patients with mild or no symptoms. The microscopic examination of the urethral secretion for Gram staining is usually performed in male patients, and the typical Gram-negative diplococci can be seen in the polymorphonuclear leukocytes, thus confirming the diagnosis of gonorrhea; while in female patients, the Gram staining of the microscopic specimen only has a success rate of 40%-70%, so cervical sampling and culture are needed to improve the detection rate; 3. If gonorrhea is diagnosed by the above tests, patients should be treated promptly and select drugs that are sensitive to gonococci under the guidance of a doctor. In addition, patients with acute gonorrhea should pay attention to rest, strictly forbid sexual intercourse, should not eat spicy and stimulating food, pay attention to personal hygiene situation, underwear, towels and other supplies, should be scalded with boiling water for the purpose of disinfection. At the same time, sexual partners should also be examined and treated.
