There are two parts of doing a good baby floating thumb surgery that you should pay great attention to, one is the timing and method of the surgery itself, and the second is the post-operative exercises and parental guidance. Many parents will be very careful in the first part to choose the hospital doctor and the plan, but neglect in the post-operative exercise and guidance, which eventually leads to poor recovery of the baby’s thumb and regret. During the consultation, I will not only discuss the surgical plan with the parents, but also pay attention to the child’s psychological state, which is very important. I was very impressed with this baby because he was relatively introverted. Before the surgery, I talked to his parents and told them that you might need to spend more time communicating with him, helping him, assisting him, or asking him to do these functional exercises. I was worried that the child might not be able to grasp our exercise method well after the functional reconstruction because of the poor communication with parents. He came from Sichuan, and it took a lot of time to travel back and forth. I kept him for one more day so that he would not be so tired and would not be in poor condition. The next day, he was much less resistant and more willing to communicate with us. Immediately after the surgery, he was able to use the reconstructed thumb to do some of the movements that he could not do before, and he was very happy about that. So I think that for older children, we need to encourage them rather than rush them, because once we let them master and realize that the reconstructed thumb can have some new functions, they will continue to develop them, which is a better positive feedback effect. For the reconstruction of the floating thumb, we would require two broad categories of movements to be done. The first is to be able to grip, grasp, and even have the strength to grasp thicker objects and larger objects. The second point is to be able to pinch and pinch small things, such as small red beans, green beans, or small glass balls. After these two actions are done, whether the baby is writing or doing some other actions in life, basically can be enough to win, can reach our pre-operative vision and requirements. Therefore, I often tell parents that whether the child is older or younger, surgery is one aspect and the child’s exercise is the other, which is a complementary relationship.
