Salbutamol is a beta2 adrenergic receptor agonist used for the pretreatment of bronchial asthma, wheezing bronchitis, and other disorders accompanied by bronchospasm. The drug is a selective adrenergic β2 receptor agonist with strong bronchodilatory effects, relaxes smooth muscle and relieves bronchospasm by inhibiting the release of allergic response mediators from mast cells. Adverse effects of the drug are allergic reactions including urticaria, bronchospasm, angioneurotic edema, hypotension, and hypokalemia. Hypokalemia is rare. Has the potential to cause the development of severe hypokalemia. Use with caution in athletes.
