How long can you live with a hole in your heart?

A hole in the heart refers to an atrial septal defect or a ventricular septal defect. Atrial septal defects and ventricular septal defects are not severe and can survive for a long time if they are less than 5 mm in diameter. Severe defects can be treated with minimally invasive surgery and open-heart surgery. An atrial septal defect is an abnormal passage between the left atrium and the right atrium. A ventricular septal defect is an abnormal passage between the left ventricle and the right ventricle. Atrial septal defects and ventricular septal defects with indications for placement of a blocker are preferred for blocker occlusion and generally result in long-term survival after surgery. If minimally invasive surgery is not possible after evaluation, surgical repair can be performed, and long-term survival is also possible after repair. If the atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect are large and cause structural changes in the heart and heart failure, life expectancy may be affected.
