What are the early signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland synthesizes and releases too much thyroid hormone, causing hyper-metabolism and sympathetic excitation, resulting in palpitations, sweating, increased eating and bowel movements, and weight loss. Most patients also suffer from proptosis, eyelid edema, and vision loss. What are the specific early symptoms of hyperthyroidism? 1. Enlarged thyroid gland and mental symptoms: Enlarged thyroid gland often shows up in the early stage of hyperthyroidism, so it is easy to judge. Most of them are diffusely and symmetrically enlarged, while a few are asymmetrical or obviously enlarged. At the same time, blood flow to the thyroid gland increases, and vascular murmurs can be heard and tremors can be felt in the upper and lower lateral lobes, especially in the upper part of the gland. This sign is characteristic and is of diagnostic importance. Mentally, the early symptoms of hyperthyroidism include agitation, hypersensitivity, talkativeness, insomnia, nervousness, lack of concentration, anxiety and irritability, suspicion, etc. Sometimes there are hallucinations and even sub-mania, but there are also those who are reticent and depressed, and patients with active tendon reflexes and shortened reflex time. 2. Eye syndrome: The eyes of hyperthyroidism patients will have abnormalities and vision problems. Patients’ eyes protrude, eyes stare or show frightened eyes. Patients often have photophobia, lacrimation, diplopia, loss of vision, eye swelling, stinging pain, foreign body sensation, etc. Due to the high protrusion of the eyeballs, the eyes cannot be closed, corneal ulceration, conjunctiva and cornea are exposed and cause congestion, edema, etc., and even blindness. 3, endocrine system: excessive secretion of thyroid hormone affects gonadal function, and adrenal cortical function is often more active in the early stage of the disease, but in patients with severe disease (such as critical illness), its function is relatively reduced or even incomplete; pituitary secretion of ACTH is increased, and plasma cortisol concentration is normal, but its clearance rate is accelerated, indicating that its transport and utilization are accelerated. 4, blood and hematopoietic system: the total number of WBC in the peripheral hematoma of this disease is low, the percentage and absolute value of lymphocytes and monocytes are increased, platelet life span is also shorter, sometimes purpura may appear, due to increased consumption, malnutrition and impaired utilization of iron can lead to anemia. 5, motor system: mainly manifested as muscle weakness, a few visible hyperthyroid myopathy. 6, skin: and extremities of a small number of patients and typical symmetrical mucinous edema, but not hypothyroidism, mostly seen in the lower pre-tibial segment of the lower legs, sometimes also seen in the dorsum of the foot and knee, the upper extremities of the face and head. Hyperthyroidism patients also need to keep a calm state of mind during the hot summer months, and if they find themselves with uncomfortable symptoms they must go to the hospital immediately for a checkup.
