What to do if you have high homocysteine

Patients who have elevated homocysteine should first make dietary adjustments by eating more green vegetables and fruits and eating meat appropriately. Secondly, medications such as oral folic acid tablets and methylcobalamin, or oral folic acid tablets and vitamin B6 can be used to lower homocysteine in the blood. Many clinical studies have shown that elevated homocysteine has become an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Patients with hypertension in particular should routinely have their homocysteine checked and, if found to be elevated, should take medication to adjust their homocysteine levels to a normal level. Patients with elevated homocysteine are also advised to have their blood glucose and lipids checked.
