Harmful effects of spironolactone tablets on women

Spironolactone is an aldosterone antagonist commonly used as an adjunct to edema in cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, and heart failure. The hazards of spironolactone tablets for women include elevated blood potassium, gastrointestinal discomfort and endocrine disorders. 1. Elevated blood potassium: the main function of spironolactone tablets is to excrete sodium and protect potassium, after long-term use of the drug, patients may have high blood potassium, resulting in hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia may cause muscle weakness and arrhythmia hazards, sometimes even life-threatening. 2. Gastrointestinal discomfort: oral spironolactone tablets have some stimulating effect on gastrointestinal tract, which may cause vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps and diarrhea, sometimes even peptic ulcer. 3. Endocrine disorders: spironolactone has an anti-androgen-like effect, women taking it for a long time may experience breast distension, voice coarsening, hair growth and other discomforts, and may also cause menstrual irregularities such as decreased menstruation and prolonged menstrual period. These endocrine manifestations may subside after discontinuation of the drug. Therefore, if you need to take spironolactone tablets, be sure to closely monitor your blood potassium under the supervision of your doctor. Spironolactone tablets are contraindicated in patients with hyperkalemia, and should be used with caution in patients with hepatic or renal insufficiency. If women have the above symptoms of endocrine disorders, they should not worry too much. If the symptoms are more serious, they can go to the hospital for timely consultation in order to adjust the medication.
