The most common type of teratoma is the pelvic ovarian teratoma, which is more common in female patients. Teratomas are divided into benign mature teratomas and malignant immature teratomas depending on the nature of the pathology. The surgical procedure differs for different types of teratoma, for example, the surgery for benign mature teratoma is still relatively simple, opening the pelvic cavity. Either traditional open surgery or laparoscopic surgery is possible, and then simple removal of the teratoma is sufficient, some require removal of the ovary on the same side as well as the adnexal tissue. But the other side is usually well and preserved. In the case of malignant immature teratoma, in addition to removal of the teratoma itself, pelvic lymph node dissection is required, and for malignant teratoma surgery is followed by chemotherapy.
