The resp, on the monitor, represents the patient’s respiratory rate. The standard respiratory rate range for a normal adult at rest is 12-20 breaths/min and for a newborn is approximately 44 breaths/min, with a slowing down of the respiratory rate with increasing age. The respiratory rate is influenced by many factors. If the patient’s current respiratory rate exceeds 24 breaths/min, it is called tachypnea, which can easily occur during fever, pain, or hyperthyroidism; if the patient’s current respiratory rate is less than 12 breaths/min, it is called bradycardia, which is common in patients with overdose of anesthetics, sedation, or increased intracranial pressure.
