Joint replacement is a medical treatment that replaces a painful joint that has lost joint function with an artificially manufactured joint prosthesis. It is most commonly used for hip and knee replacements, but is also used for shoulder and elbow replacements. The disadvantages of joint replacement, i.e., postoperative complications, include infection, joint wear and tear or loosening of the prosthesis, peripheral fractures, deep vein thrombosis and so on. 1. Infection: Because of the traumatic surgery, long time, bleeding and other characteristics, there is a risk of infection, need to control the infection in a timely manner, and even need to be re-opened for debridement, removal of the artificial joints, and then again after the infection is controlled to carry out revision surgery. 2. Wear of joint or loosening of prosthesis: due to improper surgical operation, excessive postoperative exercise, and poor fit of prosthesis, wear of joint or loosening of prosthesis may occur, which requires immediate medical treatment, as the prosthesis will not be able to perform its normal joint function if not treated in time. 3. Peripheral fracture: Due to the inconsistency of the elasticity between the artificial joint and the original bone, it can lead to periprosthetic fracture, which seriously affects the limb activities and needs timely medical treatment. 4. Deep vein thrombosis: due to the large trauma of surgery, bed rest and other factors, it is easy to cause the formation of deep vein thrombosis in the lower limbs after surgery. If the thrombus is dislodged, it will cause obstruction of blood vessels in the lungs, brain and heart, which will lead to cerebral thrombosis, cardiac infarction and pulmonary embolism. There may be some other complications after arthroplasty, but after arthroplasty, patients can improve joint function, relieve pain, and improve quality of life. Whether or not artificial joint replacement is needed needs to be determined according to the condition and individual specifics, and after a comprehensive assessment under the guidance of a doctor.
