Do patients with emphysema lose weight?

Patients with emphysema can present with wasting, but not always. Emphysema is a pathological concept that mostly refers to obstructive emphysema, which refers to a persistent swelling and dilatation of the distal end fine bronchi, resulting in loss of lung tissue elasticity and hyperinflation. It often coexists with chronic bronchitis or often develops from chronic bronchitis. Therefore, the appearance of obstructive emphysema is often a continuous and long process. There is a great exertion of the organism, which results in signs of wasting in many patients. According to the clinical typing, it can be divided into red asthmatic type and purple swelling type. The red asthmatic type is characterized by more severe symptoms of emphysema, but relatively light bronchial lesions, and is mostly seen in elderly patients with a wasted physique. However, for the purple swelling type, because the bronchial lesions are more serious, it is lighter than emphysema. Therefore, mainly cough and sputum are present, and often no signs of wasting appear.
