Should babies born positive for group B strep be observed?

Positive for Group B Streptococcus, babies may be infected at birth.Group B Streptococcus settles in the vaginal and rectal areas of the human body and normally does not cause any damage to the human body, however, if it shows positive, babies may be infected with Group B Streptococcus when they pass through the vagina at birth due to the fact that they are not as immune as adults. This in turn can cause diseases such as acute bacterial meningitis, neonatal sepsis, and necrotizing small bowel colitis in newborns. If left untreated, it may also cause complications such as mental retardation, convulsions, hearing and vision impairment, and even death. It is therefore necessary to hospitalize the child for a period of time for observation so that the condition can be treated in a timely manner if it develops.
