What’s wrong with newborn babies with yellow eyes

Yellow eyes of newborn babies are mostly caused by neonatal jaundice, which is generally divided into physiological jaundice and pathological jaundice. 1.Physiological jaundice (1) Increase in bilirubin production: newborns have a large number of red blood cells, short lifespan and rapid decomposition, so it is easy to cause bilirubin concentration to rise. (2) Poor metabolism of bilirubin by liver: the poor excretion of bilirubin by the liver in the neonatal period can cause bilirubin to be temporarily bilious in the liver. (3) Intestinal and hepatic circulation peculiarities: e.g., intestinal motility may be poor in newborns, meconium contains more bilirubin, and if the gastrointestinal tract delays excretion, bilirubin reabsorption may be increased. Physiological jaundice, scleral yellowing, yellowing of eyes, generally can subside by itself, without special treatment. 2. Pathological jaundice (1) Erythrocytosis: e.g. delayed umbilical cord ligation, chronic intrauterine hypoxia. (2) Bile excretion disorder: such as neonatal biliary atresia, hepatitis and other diseases will cause bile excretion disorder, resulting in pathological jaundice. In addition to the above, hemolysis (e.g. neonatal cranial hemorrhage and pulmonary hemorrhage, mother-infant blood group incompatibility) can also cause neonatal jaundice. It is recommended that children with obvious yellowing of the eyes and other discomforts should be seen promptly for evaluation of their condition and treatment as prescribed by the doctor. If the symptoms are severe, or if they persist and do not improve, the patient should be seen by a hospital.
