Folic acid supplementation during pregnancy

It is essential for pregnant women to take proper folic acid supplementation because it plays a very important role in preventing neural tube abnormalities and hyperhomocysteinemia, promoting red blood cell maturation and hemoglobin synthesis. Folic acid in natural foods is easily decomposed during cooking and processing and has low bioavailability; synthetic folic acid preparations have good stability and high bioavailability. Therefore, in addition to eating foods rich in folic acid, we should supplement 400μg/d of folic acid preparations during pregnancy to meet the body’s needs. Since neural tube abnormalities occur in early pregnancy, it is recommended to start folic acid supplementation in the first month of pregnancy. Foods rich in folic acid include animal liver, poultry and eggs, legumes, yeast, fresh green leafy vegetables, fruits and nuts. It is recommended that pregnant mothers ensure a total daily intake of 400g of vegetables, including more than 1/2 of fresh green leafy vegetables.
