International clinical staging of diabetic retinopathy

 
Typing
What is seen on dilated fundus examination
v No obvious retinal pathology Zhou Fang, Ophthalmology Department, Qilu Hospital, Shandong University
No abnormality
v Mild non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy
Microaneurysm only
v Moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy
In addition to microaneurysms, there are changes that are milder than severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy
v Severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy
Presence of any of the following changes without the signs of proliferative retinopathy.
Ø More than 20 intraretinal hemorrhages in each of the four quadrants
Ø venous bead-like changes in 2 or more quadrants
Ø Significant intraretinal microvascular abnormalities in at least one quadrant
v Proliferative diabetic retinopathy
One or more of the following changes are present
Ø neovascularization
Ø vitreous hemorrhage or retinal hemorrhage
