Mechanism of action of acupoint compresses in the treatment of hypertension: A medicinal ointment was prepared with Chinese medicines such as Radix et Rhizoma Pinelliae, Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong and Rhizoma Trigonellae, and applied externally to Shenque acupoint of patients with hypertension, and the changes of cardiac output, peripheral vascular resistance, and arterial compliance of patients were observed. It was found that cardiac output per beat increased, peripheral vascular resistance decreased and arterial compliance increased. This indicates that acupoints can reduce peripheral resistance, reduce cardiac load, increase cardiac output and improve cardiac function, and have obvious adjusting and therapeutic effects on the patients’ low-flow-high-resistance blood flow disorder. In terms of improving hemodynamics, the antihypertensive effect of acupoint compresses is realized by reducing the peripheral resistance of tiny arteries, but the possibility of increased compliance of large and medium-sized arteries cannot be excluded. Correct the abnormal blood rheology: with raw white mustard seeds powder, external compresses on the main acupoints of Fenglong, Renyu, Quchi and other acupoints of hypertensive patients, and add or subtract acupoints with symptoms, the results showed that the patient’s whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, erythrocyte pressure product, erythrocyte electrophoresis time, were significantly reduced compared with the pre-treatment period. The results showed that the whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, erythrocyte pressure product and erythrocyte electrophoresis time of the patients decreased significantly compared with those before the treatment. Moreover, this treatment can elevate plasma renin activity (PRA) and reduce plasma angiotensin-I (Ang-1) while lowering blood pressure, suggesting that acupoint taping has a certain adjusting effect on both.
