The fetal heart is usually examined clinically in the middle of pregnancy by means of a special fetal heart ultrasound. The best time to examine the fetal heart is usually between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation. Clinical examination of the fetal heart can detect some fetal heart malformations, such as whether the fetal four-chamber heart is intact, whether the cross structure of the four-chamber heart is normal, whether there is blood flow through the septum and interventricular septum, and whether the large blood vessels of the heart are normal. The fetal heart examination can be used clinically to detect fetal heart malformations with a view to targeted treatment during pregnancy or to give good counseling to the pregnant woman and her family and to seek the patient’s and family’s opinion on the pregnancy.
