Usually, whether a lumbar disc herniation can heal itself is related to the type and degree of herniation. Generally, if a lumbar disc bulge is suggested by CT examination and the fibrous ring is intact, it can heal itself after bed rest and conservative treatment for about 2-4 weeks. Lumbar disc herniation is mostly caused by the rupture of the lumbar spine’s fibrous ring and nucleus pulposus protruding to compress nerves, which often manifests clinically as lumbar pain, lower limb pain and numbness. If the lumbar disc bulge is intact, the lumbar traction or local lumbar protection and other conservative treatment methods can be used to restore the herniated disc to its normal position and relieve the pain and other related symptoms in the lower limbs. If the lumbar disc herniation causes bulging or conservative treatment is ineffective, then surgical removal of the nucleus pulposus is required. Patients with lumbar disc herniation can wear lumbar protection, limit the activities of the lumbar back muscles, properly exercise the lumbar back muscles, pay attention to rest, eat more food with high calcium content, eat more vegetables and fruits and soy products, etc. Most patients can be relieved or cured by conservative treatment.
