What is Patchouli’s efficacy and effects

Patchouli is pungent and warm, belongs to the spleen, stomach and lung meridians, and has the effect of resolving dampness, relieving summer heat and stopping vomiting. Irregular diet often causes dampness from within, and internal dampness can cause external dampness, resulting in loss of appetite and a thick, greasy tongue. Patchouli has the effect of resolving dampness and can be used in combination with Cang Zhu and Hou Pao. For diarrhea caused by heavy dampness, patchouli can be used with Ge Gen and Bai Zhu. Patchouli is warm but not dry, it can disperse cold and resolve dampness at the same time. It is most suitable for the summer season for external wind and cold and internal cold injury resulting in fever, headache, abdominal distension, vomiting and diarrhea. Patchouli can resolve dampness and transport the spleen, and can also treat all kinds of vomiting, and is effective when used alone or in combination with Radix Panax notoginseng and ginger. If dampness and heat are combined and are seen in body heat and weakness, abdominal distension, and constipation, Patchouli can be combined with Scutellaria baicalensis, Slippery Rock, and Artemisia inchi.
