The opening of the cervix is located in the back of the vagina. The cervix can be seen through a speculum and is usually rounded in unmarried women and zigzag in women who have had children. The length of the cervix is about 2 to 3 centimeters. The inner lumen of the cervix is pike-shaped and is called the cervical canal, which is connected to the body of the uterus at an area called the isthmus of the cervix, which is also known as the internal opening of the cervix. The lower end of the cervical canal, which is exposed to the vaginal opening, is also known as the external opening of the cervix. Some women may describe a swelling in the vagina during a clinical visit, which may be caused by touching the cervix when an examination does not reveal any tumor growth. The cervix may be touched during vaginal cleansing, when a finger is inserted deeper into the vagina, or when there is prolapse.
