A few misconceptions about the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee

With the improvement of China’s economic level, the people’s health has been improving and life expectancy has been significantly increased, the health of the elderly has caused great concern to the national society. Osteoarthritis of the knee joint has become one of the most common diseases affecting the health and quality of life of the elderly because of the constant pain and dysfunction of the joint, and in serious cases, even preventing daily walking. Many middle-aged and elderly people seek medical help for this reason, but the treatment is ineffective and they are trapped by the disease. Not only do they suffer from physical pain, but they also fall into a state of confusion and boredom mentally. In our medical practice, we found that many elderly people adopted a deviation from the scientific treatment path based on one-sided information, and even lost their confidence in treatment. This has led to serious consequences. In fact, as long as the misconceptions about this disease are carefully corrected and the correct prevention and treatment measures are chosen, it is entirely possible for the majority of patients to get rid of their plight and return to health. Myth 1, “Since it is a disease of the elderly, we can only rely on doctors to treat it.” In fact, osteoarthritis is a manifestation of the aging and degenerative process of the human body in the knee joint area. Just as it is advisable to eat soft foods for aging teeth, the aging knee joint should avoid the strenuous activities that it endured during its young and strong years. Many patients with early to mid-stage osteoarthritis of the knee can have their symptoms significantly reduced if they follow their doctor’s instructions and change their sports (activities) to reduce the intensity of their knee joint activities. Myth #2: “Since it is a disease, medication, injections, and physical therapy are the treatment.” In fact, the cause of osteoarthritis of the knee is that as humans age (around 40 years old for men and 35 years old for women), the muscles of the lower limbs begin to atrophy and muscle strength decreases, resulting in damage to the joint. That is, people often say that “people old legs first old” means. At this time, if you adjust the amount of exercise in time, and pay attention to strengthen the lower limb muscle training, you can completely avoid wear and tear or accidental damage to the knee joint. Therefore, from the etiological point of view, the most important prevention and treatment is to maintain the strength of the lower limb muscles, and to achieve this purpose, the main reliance on scientific exercise and lower limb muscle training under the guidance of doctors. Myth 3: “Chronic diseases in the elderly require long-term medication.” The current clinical treatment with drugs is to relieve the symptoms and not to change the pathological process of osteoarthritis. The side effects of long-term medication may also cause serious complications. If you reduce the intensity of exercise, strengthen the lower limbs on the basis of muscle training, combined with taking some joint cartilage nutrition, protection of health care products, but a safe and wise choice. Myth 4: “If the condition is serious, the only way to treat it is by surgery.” The so-called surgical treatment, usually refers to minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery, mainly to solve the osteoarthritis of the knee joint has stuck pressure, playing soft leg, limited inflammatory lesions, etc., and can not cure the lesion. Modern research findings prove that treatment by arthroscopic minimally invasive surgery alone is not perfect and must be combined with post-surgical rehabilitation in order to ensure the effectiveness of treatment. Myth #5, “Based on personal experience, multiple doctors can’t cure it at all.” This is also wrong. The prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis is the focus of clinical research in the medical community, and very satisfactory results have been achieved, greatly improving the quality of life of patients. It is important to understand the disease correctly, to cooperate with the doctor and patient, to adjust the movement, and to use comprehensive treatment measures and rehabilitation training. By integrating medical treatment into daily life and forming a new benign state of life, we can free our elderly friends from osteoarthritis of the knee and return to a life of nurturing in their old age.
