Postoperative care measures after lumbar puncture

After lumbar puncture, patients need to lie flat on the pillow for 4-6 hours, because the flat position can reduce the outflow of cerebrospinal fluid, and can also reduce the patient’s headache, if the patient maintains an upright position after lumbar puncture, the pain will increase significantly, and the cerebrospinal fluid will flow out, causing some damage to the body. It is best not to get out of bed for 24 hours after lumbar puncture, and the patient should try to urinate and defecate in bed during these 24 hours. If it is impossible to urinate, catheterization is also an option. If the patient’s intracranial pressure is low, he or she can drink something to prevent the occurrence of headache, nausea, vomiting, and vertigo. If the intracranial pressure is high and the patient cannot drink more water, the nursing staff should closely observe the patient’s vital signs and consciousness to avoid brain herniation, and the medical staff can also educate the family.
