What to do about chronic cough in the elderly

When an elderly person develops a chronic cough, its treatment includes the following: 1. Send the elderly to the hospital for a CT lung examination to rule out pneumonia, bronchitis, bronchiectasis, tuberculosis, and lung-occupying diseases, and rule out the above diseases before giving the patient a further diagnosis; 2. Rule out seasonal irritation to pollen and dust, and rule out the patient’s cough caused by allergic factors 3. rule out that the patient has an irritating cough caused by taking ACEI-type drugs such as Benadryl and Enalapril; 4. when the above tests are normal, the elderly can use Chinese medicine to regulate their cough. TCM coughs should be analyzed according to different types of evidence to determine whether the cough is caused by wind-cold, wind-heat or autumn dryness, phlegm-damp cough, phlegm-heat cough, liver qi offending the lungs cough and coughs caused by deficiency of lung yin or kidney qi. By formulating different protocols for patients through different identification, we can achieve good results in treating patients’ chronic cough.
