Carefully ask for a history of alcohol consumption or ethanol exposure before metronidazole administration. Advise patients to prohibit ethanol-containing beverages during and within 1 week of discontinuation of the drug, and not to use ethanol-containing medicines or to use ethanol for skin disinfection or scrubbing to cool down the body to ensure the safety of the drug.
