Ultrasonic toothbrushes cannot remove calculus. In essence, the electric toothbrushes currently in use, one is rotary and the other is ultrasonic, both of which play a major role in brushing, but are no substitute for scaling. It is true that scaling also uses ultrasonic waves to shock and clean out the teeth, especially the gum sulcus, but the principle is completely different from that of ultrasonic toothbrushes. Because the ultrasonic toothbrush is mainly for soft tissue bristles, it can partially remove periodontal plaque and tartar, but when it comes to hard calculus, the structure is not strong enough to remove the tartar. Scaling, on the other hand, is a direct application of the scaling head, on which ultrasonic vibrations are applied to shatter and remove the hard tartar.
