Surgery for spinal vascular malformations is risky. Because the malformation is located in the spinal cord, the spinal cord is often vascularized in the cervical and lumbar medullas, and sometimes in the thoracic medulla as well. All spinal cords have an important function and all spinal cords are part of the central nervous system, which is non-renewable, two factors that make the spinal cord extremely dangerous and important. Although they are all part of the central nervous system, they are localized into functional subregions, and these locations are safer to manipulate. However, as the spinal cord is an important functional area, the process of separating the arteriovenous malformations or embolizing the malformed mass through the supplying arteries with different gels may leak inside the normal spinal cord supplying blood vessels, which may result in damage to the spinal cord. It is more difficult to recover from spinal cord damage, and requires long-term persistent rehabilitation, which is difficult for some patients to achieve full recovery.
