Pain in the ribs after a fall is common for the following reasons: First, soft tissue damage to the ribs, mainly to the intercostal muscles and intercostal nerves. Patients who suffer a strain caused by sudden force on the intercostal muscles and other soft tissues during a fall will show symptoms of local swelling and pain in the ribs, while the magnitude of breathing will also be affected to some extent. Secondly, rib fracture, if the patient lands directly on the ribs during a fall or is hit by a hard object, rib fracture can easily occur. Rib fractures can be either single or multiple. The fracture can cause severe pain and also severely restrict respiratory movements, making the patient susceptible to complications of rib fracture such as bronchopneumonia, from which early treatment can allow the patient to recover.
