Rib pain can be further seen in the thoracic surgery or pain department of a hospital. Common causes of rib pain are costochondritis and rib fractures. For patients with costochondritis, they should first pay attention to rest, avoid straining, pay attention to cold and warmth, avoid drinking alcohol and eating spicy food, and maintain a relaxed mood. Injections are also effective. Another cause of rib pain is rib fracture, which requires a plain radiograph of the rib cage to further define the exact location, number and presence of pleural and pulmonary injuries. For simple rib fractures, chest straps can be used for immobilization, and oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can provide better pain relief and prevent lung infection. In severe cases of multiple fractures combined with pleural and pulmonary injuries, surgery with rib fixation and closed drainage of the thoracic cavity, and treatment with sensitive antimicrobial drugs, is required. In patients with intercostal neuralgia similar to rib fracture pain, nerve-nourishing therapy such as methylcobalamin, vitamin B1, and murine nerve growth factor should also be given.
