Black and red ginseng contains black ginseng and red ginseng. The effects of black ginseng are clearing heat and cooling blood, nourishing yin and lowering fire, and removing toxins and dispersing knots; red ginseng is a great tonic for vital energy, restoring the pulse and fixing the blood (restoring normal pulse, preventing and controlling deficiency), and benefiting the qi and taking care of the blood (preventing bleeding by means of replenishing the qi). Black ginseng, also known as xuan ginseng, is used for clearing heat and cooling blood for severe fever at night and spotting and rash on the body; nourishing yin and lowering fire for heartburn and thirst, constipation and cough caused by heat illness and injury to yin; and detoxifying and dispersing toxins and nodules for the treatment of swollen and painful red eyes and swollen and sore throats. It is not suitable for people with cold spleen and stomach, and with little food and loose stools (thin and unformed feces). It should not be used together with quassia. Red Ginseng is a processed ginseng, which is used to replenish vital energy, restore pulse and stabilize loss of blood, for treating deficiency of body and desire for loss of blood, cold limbs and weak pulse; it is also used for treating blood leakage (excessive menstruation or dripping of menstruation) and blood loss due to lack of blood intake. It is not suitable to be used together with Veratrum and Wu Ling Yi. Adverse effects of the above drugs are not known.
