How to donate bone marrow

Bone marrow donation is the donation of blood stem cells in the bone marrow. Before donating blood stem cells, the donor must first take peripheral blood tests to check the human leukocyte antigen HLA, if there is a patient and the donor HLA match, that is, a successful match, then the bone marrow donation will begin. Nowadays, the method of bone marrow donation is very simple. The donor is first given a subcutaneous injection of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, which usually takes 3-5 days to mobilize the hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow into the peripheral blood, a process called bone marrow mobilization. When the number of hematopoietic stem cells in peripheral blood reaches a certain level, a blood cell separator can be used to separate the donor’s hematopoietic stem cells, and then the separated hematopoietic stem cells are transfused back into the patient’s body, a process called bone marrow transplantation.
