Astragalus is a kind of traditional Chinese medicine with the effects of tonifying qi, stopping sweating, fixing the surface, inducing diuresis, eliminating swelling, generating fluids and nourishing blood, and astringing sores. It can be used to treat the symptoms of Qi subsidence (deficiency of spleen and stomach qi, which results in the fall of internal organs), qi deficiency and edema, qi deficiency and fatigue, surface deficiency and spontaneous sweating, blood deficiency and atrophy, and carbuncle and gangrene (a kind of venomous sores, which occurs in the surface of the body, the limbs, and the internal organs of the acute suppurative disease) without convergence, and so on.

For treating Qi deficiency and subsidence, it can be combined with roasted licorice, ginseng, shengma and atractylodes. It can be used in the treatment of surface deficiency and spontaneous sweating by combining with Fangfeng and Atractylodes Macrocephalae. For carbuncle not converging after ulceration, it can be combined with ginseng and angelica.
