Amniotic fluid and secretion can be differentiated by the character of the fluid, pH test paper and vaginal examination.
1. Characteristics: Amniotic fluid is generally larger in volume, may contain fetal fat, fetal epithelial cells, etc., and is generally colorless and transparent; while secretions are more varied in character, and may be thin or viscous, but the amount of secretions is generally small, and can be judged by means of leukorrhea routines and so on.
2. pH test paper: amniotic fluid is generally alkaline, which can make the pH test paper change its color to blue; whereas secretions generally do not cause the pH test paper to change its color.
3. Vaginal examination: If amniotic fluid is observed to flow out of the cervical os, it means that the fluid is amniotic fluid; on the contrary, it may be secretion.
